Breast cancer campaign hits home

Upper Pine Fire Captain Cate Harding is getting lots of support from colleagues and community members as she prepares to start treatment for breast cancer. Department staff, the Bayfield Firefighters Association and Upper Pine Auxiliary members put on a pancake breakfast fundraiser that drew a good turnout for her Sunday morning at Station 5 near Forest Lakes. They served up whole-wheat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee, and juice.

"It was a big success," Chief Bruce Evans said. "There were a lot of people we hadn't seen in some time. I think Cate was pretty overwhelmed." The breakfast raised around $6,000, he said.

Eckert was holding a glass bowl full of donations. Several male firefighters sported pink hair, or pink scalp in one case. Various shades of pink shirts also were much in evidence, representing the national campaign to find a cure for breast cancer.

Last Friday, Upper Pine firefighters and members of the Bayfield Marshal's Office were at The Grocery Store fundraising for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
