On Monday, the Durango Duplicate Bridge Club held its all-day annual Alzheimer’s fundraising event, The Longest Day.
This American Contract Bridge League event honors the 24 hours per day, seven days a week that caregivers devote to patients suffering from this debilitating mental disease. Many believe that keeping the brain active as we age with mind-stretching activities like playing bridge is an important deterrent to Alzheimer’s.
The fundraiser was held at the La Plata County Fairgrounds extension building and raised more than $15,000 from more than 80 donors. The Bridge Club conducted games in the morning, afternoon and evening with almost 100 players in attendance for one or more sessions. Many area social bridge groups joined with the regular duplicate players, and some players attended from Arizona and New Mexico. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner was provided for the marathon players who couldn’t get enough bridge.
Durango Bagel donated breakfast bagels and muffins and the Subway on north Main Avenue donated subs for lunch. Susan Westerwick was chairperson of this year’s event, with many volunteers providing the needed help.
In 2018, the Durango Duplicate Bridge Club raised the most money of any bridge club in Colorado and ranked 17th in the nation.
