Classes were canceled Thursday at Ignacio High School for a broken heating pipe, according to an announcement from the school district.
The elementary and middle schools were not canceled.
Rocco Fuschetto, superintendent for Ignacio School District, said the building should reopen today, but he could not make an official determination at that time. School officials will update parents through the district dialer system, he said.
“We’ll see how the cleaning goes this morning,” Fuschetto said Thursday. “Everybody that needed to be contacted has been on site already.”
The pipe’s pressure valve broke in the middle of the night, spilling glycol, which acts as an antifreeze in the system, onto ceiling tiles and the surrounding area in the school’s east wing.
School administrators don’t know what caused the break, Fuschetto said.
The broken pipe damaged two classrooms and up to 200 ceiling tiles. While repairs and cleanup took place Thursday morning, the school also planned to check on the electricity and fire alarm system for any damage.
“We should be pretty well cleaned up,” Fuschetto said. “That area might be off limits, but we should be OK.”
