Broken water line on County Road 203 repaired

Crews continue working on damaged road, hillside
Mud surrounds vehicles parked at the Animas Cliffs Condominiums on Tuesday after a water line break in the 1700 block of County Road 203. One lane of the road remained closed Wednesday as crews repair the roadway and hillside.

Rocks appear to have busted a water line Tuesday in the 1700 block of County Road 203, but repairs are underway and water service has been restored to affected households.

The road’s northbound lane within the 1700 block remains closed Wednesday as Durango utility crews repair the road. The lane was closed Tuesday as crews finished repairs on the line.

The break occurred around 9 a.m., across from the Animas Cliffs condominiums, disrupting water service to three households.

Service was restored Tuesday around 4:30 p.m.

“Our priority (Tuesday) was on completing repairs and restoring service,” Sean Bannon, with the city utilities department, said Wednesday. “Now, we’re working with the county to repair the road surface and adjacent shoulder.”

Bannon said some large rocks used as bedding material when the pipe was installed appear to have fractured the 4-inch pipe.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched temporarily Tuesday to help with traffic, according to a news release from the county.

Water and debris deluged the apartment complex parking lot. Officials were trying to get vehicles moved, but some owners reportedly were on vacation.

“There was a lot of mud that flowed down into the parking lot,” Bannon said. “Weather dependent, crews will be on site cleaning up the mud. The majority of the damage was down the hillside from the road. We’ve ordered some concrete for repair, and that will be finished today (Wednesday).”

Bannon said the northbound lane reopened Wednesday after crews finished working, but barriers will remain around the repaired portion of road while the cement cures.
