Brown has proved value to District 9-R

When Erika Brown was appointed to fill the vacant school board seat in February 2020, the pool of volunteers was tiny, and the workload was enormous.

Lucky for us, Erika has a history of productive engagement with the district, having served as a classroom volunteer and on School Accountability Committee at Needham Elementary, and participated in Leadership 9-R to learn about the intricacies of district operations and prepare for her role on the school board.

During her 18-month term, Erika helped navigate a financial crisis, pandemic and union contract negotiation. She was instrumental in recruitment, interview and contract negotiation to hire Superintendent Karen Cheser, who brings a wealth of experience and expertise, a unified vision for the district, equity practices, strong communication and a strategic plan for improving achievement for all students.

Erika worked tirelessly (up to 30 hours per week) to pass the 4A bond – to rebuild Miller Middle School, create a new Career and Technical Innovation Center to enhance vocational education, upgrade HVAC systems, improve safety and complete deferred maintenance at every school in the district.

Erika has demonstrated an understanding of school board governance and the need for transparency. She advocates for districtwide accountability and sustainability, and works collaboratively with fellow board members, parents, district leaders and teachers. Erika maintains a steadfast commitment to the education, health and well-being of each and every student of our district. We are fortunate she stepped forward to serve, and we would be fortunate to have her for four more years.
