It is amazing that in this corner of Colorado, we have such a high performing public school system given the fact that this state has one of the lowest per pupil education investments in the country. This performance is due, in no small part, to the school board members. I am an educator and have been in the Durango School District schools as a substitute. I have seen firsthand some of the great things being done by the school administration with the support of the current school board directors.
In an attempt to hear both sides in each race, I went to the League of Women Voters school board forum this past Sunday. I wanted to see if any of the challengers could earn my vote with good ideas and a solid platform. Only one of the three challengers was present. Tamara Fenberg and Pearl Stegner were absent. If they were serious candidates, this forum should have been a priority and one of the best ways to get their message out to the voters. I have no idea what these two candidates can offer our kids.
I left the forum knowing that Erika Brown, Andrea Parmeter and Rick Peterson are well-informed and understand the needs of our district school children. They are willing to put the time and work in to show the voters how they can keep the district moving forward. They are our best choice. Reelect Brown, Parmenter and Peterson for school board.
