Weather conditions on Thursday allowed U.S. Forest Service crews to burn 370 acres in the HD Mountains near Chimney Rock National Monument, which brought the 842 Fire to a total of 407 acres burned.
Burn-out operations are used to help guide and contain the fire, ensure the safety of firefighters and the public, reduce fuel-loading on the landscape and prevent more severe wildfires in the future.
Operations east of Bayfield will continue through the weekend, weather permitting, and smoke may be visible from Colorado Highway 151 and U.S. Highway 160 near the HD Mountains and Chimney Rock.
Higher humidity and afternoon precipitation during the next 24 to 72 hours are in the forecast, which will help moderate fire activity.
No travel or camping restrictions are in place. However, visitors should be aware that fire activity could increase at any time.
The fire was initially ignited by a lightning strike earlier this week.
