Burst pipe floods Fort Lewis College Aquatics Center

Pool closed until further notice
A sprinkler pipe broke over the pool area at the Fort Lewis College Aquatics Center on Tuesday.

A sprinkler pipe burst sometime Tuesday morning in the pool area of the Fort Lewis College Aquatics Center, closing the pool until further notice.

The busted pipe flooded the pool area and mechanical areas beneath the pool.

According to Fort Lewis College spokesman Mitch Davis, most of the water was removed by early Tuesday afternoon, and the school is assessing the damage.

“It appears that anchors securing a sprinkler line gave way, and the line fell and broke,” Davis said.

What caused the anchors to break has not been determined, he said.

Davis expects more information on damage and costs will be available Wednesday.

The pool’s closure will impact schools and organizations that use it, including the Durango High School swimming and diving teams.

Offices in the Aquatics Center and surrounding buildings were not affected.

The Durango High School basketball games set for Tuesday night at the college were played as scheduled.
