Stephanie Roberts completes doctoral degree

Peak physical therapy announces, Stephanie Roberts has successfully completed a doctorate in physical therapy from Regis University in Denver.

She graduated from the program with honors. Emphasis was placed on the current, best evidence to treat musculoskeletal disorders. Course studies emphasized manual therapy, including mobilization and manipulation of the neck, mid, and low back as well as the lower extremity, including the hip, knee and ankle. Education also included courses on clinical decision making, professional development, differential diagnosis (determining musculoskeletal versus nonmusculoskeletal causes of pain) and the role of the physical therapist in the current health-care model, including social justice and advocacy for the profession and the clients served.

Creature Comforts to host free event

Creature Comforts will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a free event from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at 305 South Camino del Rio.

Four Corners Broadcasting will have a live radio remote with drawings, door prizes, food and more. The La Plata County Humane Society, Annie’s Orphans, D-SNiP Spay & Neuter and Cat & Kitten Care of Southwest Colorado will have booths with dogs and cats available for adoption. Creature Comforts is partnering with Sunnyside Farms and Zuberfizz to raise money for the animal rescues by selling burgers, brats and bottles of Zuberfizz at the event. Free ice-cream cones will be available in the afternoon. Customers also will be able to donate their change by rounding up at the register. Twenty-nine pet food vendors and pet experts will be available to answer questions and give samples.

District Association announces board member

The board of directors of the Special District Association of Colorado welcomes Kathy Morris as a new board member.

Morris will serve the remainder of a two-year term previously held by John McCaulley of Vail. She is currently an elected official and the vice chairwoman of the Durango Fire Protection District Board. She also sits on the Colorado School District Self Insurance Pool board of directors, where she serves as the chairwoman.

Evening’s Porch announces new hire

Evening’s Porch Assisted Living announces the addition of Jessica Martin to the care-giving team as its caregiver supervisor.

Martin has been a certified nurse assistant for 12 years and also has many years of supervisory experience. She has worked in home health and hospice, assisted-living and long-term care facilities. Evening’s Porch is scheduled to open in September.

Presenters sought for Lunch & Learn

The Durango Chamber of Commerce is now accepting presentation ideas for its 2015 Lunch & Learn schedule.

The chamber is looking for members who are interested in sharing their knowledge about a business-related topic. Topics must be relevant and educational to small-business owners and their employees. Topics attendees are most interested in include marketing, social media, sales, business growth, accounting and technology.

Natural health care changes name, location

Dr. Nicola St. Mary announces that Pura Vida Natural Healthcare has a new name and a new location.

The practice’s new name is Pura Vida Healthcare: A Holistic Cooperative. A grand opening will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at the new location, 160 E. 12th St., Suite 1.

St. Mary has partnered with seven other health professionals, and the center now offers more than 10 healing modalities to choose from. Pura Vida also will support local artists by highlighting one artist every two months. Unitarian Universalist committee receives donation

Maureen Maliszewski of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango’s Social Justice Committee received a donation check of $5,000 in support of its Education Fund last month.

The Community Foundation of Southwest Colorado serves as a conduit for donations and invests and manages grants to meet the needs of its five-county community. A donor who was impressed by Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango’s efforts, specifically asked to contribute to the fellowship’s Educational Scholarship Fund.
