Local First, 4CORE share office space

Local First and the Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency are sharing an office space. Both organizations are now in the West Building, 835 East Second Ave., Room 440.

Both nonprofits work to stimulate local economic growth and preserve independently owned businesses in La Plata County. Local First and 4CORE work together on the Resource Smart Business Program, which provides assessments, recommendations and incentives for local businesses to improve building efficiency, worksite wellness and sustainability.

Sharing expenses such as rent, printing costs, utilities and Internet is a strategy many nonprofits are using to reduce overhead costs and improve the ability to collaborate. Working in close proximity allows for the exchange of ideas and information, preventing overlapping services and increasing cooperation between organizations.

Durango firms design Alamosa building

The city of Alamosa announced that the new city hall and library, a 25,295-square-foot facility, has been awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The facility, designed by Durango firms Reynolds + Associates Architecture and Engineering and ME&E Engineering, was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council for its energy efficiency and quality of workspace provided to building occupants while simultaneously reducing the environmental effects of building operations. The sustainability program, which resulted in the LEED Silver certification included a ground-source geothermal system resulting in reduced cooling and heating energy use, reduced water-consumption strategies, diversion of construction waste, use of recycled and regional materials, increased ventilation and interior finishes.
