Know Your Dough receives donation
Know Your Dough, a local nonprofit providing financial literacy for youth and young adults, announces it has received a donation by Marc and Jane Katz.
The nonprofit is grateful for the $5,000 check received recently. The nonprofit will be able to offer more financial literacy programs in La Plata County as a result of this contribution.

Region 9 SCAPE receives grant
The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado, Inc. has received a Rural Business Enterprise Grant through U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs, called SCAPE.
Region 9 has been awarded $60,000 from USDA. The grant funding will help support the SCAPE program, which offers in-depth mentoring, office space and an equity investment to help new ventures enter markets and raise capital. Since 2013, the program has graduated six business ventures creating eight jobs and leveraging $465,000 in investment. The program seeks to develop high-growth, job-creating firms in Southwest Colorado.
Business proposals for the next SCAPE program, which starts in January 2015, will be accepted until Sunday.

Cortez hospice named enterprise zone
Hospice of Montezuma has been approved as an Enterprise Zone Contribution Project by the Colorado Economic Development Commission. This designation allows all donor contributions of $250 or more for this project to be eligible for a 25 percent state tax credit on cash donations, and a 12.5 percent state tax credit on in-kind donations.
Hospice of Montezuma was approved as a Contribution Project because it provides needed rural health-care services specifically hospice and home care by nurses, physicians, social workers, counselors, clergy, and volunteers to allow residents to stay in their homes.

Vet practice in running for award
Riverview Animal Hospital is one of three finalists for Petplan’s 2015 “Practice of the Year” award.
Riverview Animal Hospital is managed by Stacee Santi and Karyn Ekola.
An independent judging panel, made up of 15 veterinary experts and industry leaders, chose the finalists. Finalists were selected for their impact on veterinary medicine and their commitment to providing an exceptional level of care. The panel also considered the votes of support Petplan received from clients, colleagues and pet owners.
Winners will be announced at Petplan’s 2015 Veterinary Awards Dinner on Jan. 18 in Orlando, Florida. If Riverview Animal Hospital is named “Practice of the Year,” the team will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize and a $1,000 donation to a pet-focused charity of the business’ choice.

Chamber to host Business After Hours
The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at DurangoSpace, 1221 Main Ave.
The cost is $7 for chamber members and guests. There will be food, drinks and door prizes.
Barbara McLachlan receives award
The Journalism Education Association has named Barbara McLachlan of Durango a 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award honoree.
The association presents this award to retirees for lifetime dedication to journalism education. McLachlan will receive the award April 18 at the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Denver. McLachlan retired in May after advising El Diablo, the student newspaper for Durango High School. She also was active in the Colorado High School Press Association. McLachlan was named the Durango School District’s Teacher of the Year in 2012. She also coordinated the Four Corners Press Day for high school media students for 18 years.
Jeweler joins Jamie’s Fine Jewelry
Loretta Jones, longtime Durango jeweler and appraiser, will join Jamie’s Fine Jewelry, 125 E. 10th St., as a consultant and bench jeweler on a limited basis.
Jones started working at Johnson Jewelry in 1975. During that time, she started her formal jewelry education. She received her Registered Jeweler title from Gemological Institute of American in 1977, Certified Gemologist title in 1981 from GIA and American Gem Society. She was the first woman in Colorado to have this title.

Holiday shopping focus of Tuesday Talk
Durango Chamber of Commerce will host Tuesday Talk from 7:45 to 9 a.m. Dec. 2 at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.

La Plata Electric hires billing clerk
Amanda Miles has joined La Plata Electric Association as billing clerk in the Finance and Accounting Department.
Working in coordination with LPEA’s finance executives and customer-service representatives, Miles helps customers with billing as well as troubleshooting meter reading and billing issues. Miles was raised in Creede, Colorado. She attended the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, earning her degree in fitness, health and wellness.

La Plata Electric announces promotion
Justin Talbot, who had been serving as interim manager of operations, has now been named to the permanent position of manager of operations at La Plata Electric Association.
Talbot had previously served as manager of lines and services. In late summer, Talbot stepped in as interim manager. Born and raised in Bayfield, Talbot joined LPEA as a groundman in 1994 after studies at Colorado State University.
In his new position, Talbot steps into the overall management position, overseeing the 50-plus member operations team that ensures maintenance of the system, construction and safety of personnel.

KDGO radio station announces changes
Durango radio station KDGO 1240-AM now also can be heard at a new dial position, 98.3-FM.
This station is the primary source of news for Durango’s conservatives and business community, carrying top-rated conservative talk radio programs.. The move was made possible after building a new tower on Missionary Ridge, allowing the station to upgrade both its reach and signal clarity.
In addition to the new dial position, there is a new logo and a new voice of the station. ABC news has been replaced with Fox News, and local news provided by The Durango Herald will be coming soon.
Pay it Forward Hiring Drive to be held
The Express Employment Professionals office in Durango will host a Pay it Forward Hiring Drive to put 15 unemployed people to work this holiday season.
The goal of this drive is to give encouragement and purpose to as many job-seekers as possible by providing them the opportunity to earn a week’s worth of pay and help provide for their families during the holidays.
By joining Express in this hiring effort, employers will gain a qualified worker and give the gift of employment to an individual who would otherwise not work during the period Dec. 1-19. Express associates are screened and evaluated before being placed in short- and long-term assignments.
