FredrickZink promotes veteran employee

Michelle Sainio, CPA, CGMA has been promoted to audit manager for FredrickZink & Associates, an accounting, tax and business consulting firm in Durango.

A magna cum laude graduate of Fort Lewis College with a degree in accounting, Sainio joined the firm in 2006. She has developed expertise working with construction contractors, long-term care facilities and nonprofit organizations in Durango as well as across the state.

Sainio was also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi in college and volunteered preparing tax returns. Sainio currently serves as the president of the Four Corners Chapter of the Colorado Society of CPAs, treasurer of the Women’s Resource Center and Finance Committee co-chair for La Plata County American Cancer Society.

Growing Spaces receives recognition

Growing Spaces of Pagosa Springs will be recognized Oct. 2 at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for achievement of bronze-tier environmental leadership by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The department’s Environmental Leadership Program is a voluntary program that encourages and rewards superior environmental performers that go beyond the requirements of state and federal environmental regulations.

Growing Spaces is one of 33 Colorado entities to be recognized this year as a bronze-level achiever. It was acknowledged in the manufacturing and industrial category. In order to be part of the program, entities must meet basic requirements in addition to outlined sets of beyond-compliance requirements that demonstrate how they have made significant achievements improving Colorado’s environment.

Economic summit to take place Oct. 22

The La Plata County Economic Development Alliance’s eighth annual Economic Summit will take place Oct. 22 at the Sky Ute Casino Resort in Ignacio.

Breakout sessions will cover topics such as strategic planning, conflict management, technology resources, managing growth, the future of higher education, mergers and acquisitions and more. The day will end with a networking reception.

Cheri Kelly receives promotion

Four Corners Health Care Center and Junction Creek Rehabilitation announce that after serving the Durango community as a speech-language pathologist at Junction Creek Rehab for more than 10 years, Cheri Kelly became manager of the Rehabilitation Program on June 1.

The rehabilitation department at Four Corners Health Care Center provides physical and occupational therapies as well as speech-language pathology services to short- and long-term residents and outpatient clients.

Kelly received her undergraduate degree in organizational development from the University of Michigan and her master’s in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University. Kelly is a long-standing member of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association including the Neurogenic and Gerontology Special Interest Groups.

Quickbooks intro offered October 9

The Small Business Development Center: Southwest Colorado and First National Bank of Durango will sponsor “Introduction to Quickbooks” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Training Room at First National Bank, 259 west Ninth St.

A break for lunch will be taken from noon to 1 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a brown-bag lunch. This workshop, taught by Certified Quickbooks Pro-Advisor, Bethany McManus, will help small-business owners understand how much money they are bringing in and how they are spending it. Designed for business owners McManus will explain how the software works and how it can help manage the finances of a business and save time. Topics will include: It is installed ... now what? How to get through the set-up process; Creating an effective chart of accounts; Small business accounting 101: What every owner should know; Strategies for managing cash flow; How to make paying bills less painfull; and Incoming: Strategies to get paid faster.

Richard Ballantine joins Colorado Humanities

Colorado Humanities has welcomed to its board The Durango Herald Publisher (retired) Richard G. Ballantine, of Durango, who was newly appointed in July by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Board members monitor the Colorado Humanities’ mission, provide fiscal oversight, approve programs, make personal contributions and participate in conferences and continuing education activities.

Now retired after 30 years, Ballantine is a farmer, journalist and dedicated philanthropist. Named the 2014 Citizen of the Year at Durango Rocks! by the Durango Chamber of Commerce, he has helped numerous local and state boards, including the Fort Lewis College Board of Trustees, where he was president, and the Fort Lewis College Foundation Board. Ballantine earned his undergraduate degree in history from Stanford University before joining the Army, where he served until 1971. He returned to Colorado after a tour of duty in Vietnam and now sits on several boards of directors, in addition to Colorado Humanities.

Candidate forum to take place Oct. 7

The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host an Eggs & Issues/Candidates Forum at 8 a.m. Oct. 7 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

The cost is $16 for chamber members and $21 for nonmembers. The forum will feature the candidates running for La Plata County Sheriff – Duke Schirard, R, and Sean Smith, D – and the candidates running for La Plata County Treasurer – Bobby Lieb, R, and Allison Morrisey, D.
