Winter sports hires management team
The Durango Winter Sports Foundation announces the hiring of Lander & Associates to guide the club with expanded fundraising and event management.
The foundation supports Durango Nordic Ski Club, Purgatory Freestyle Team and Purgatory Alpine Ski Team. Lander & Associates has been retained for donor management, grant writing, special-event production, direct fundraising, public relations and marketing. Susan Lander, along with Beth Lamberson Warren, will provide professional nonprofit management to the organization.
Lander has guided the Women’s Resource Center and Music in the Mountains to selection for El Pomar Foundation’s Award for Excellence. Lamberson Warren has done the same for Adaptive Sports Association and KSUT Public Radio.
Corporate and event sponsorship opportunities are available for the 2014-15 ski season.

Physical therapy firm adds to team
Madeleine Bennett, who has a doctorate degree in physical therapy, joined the team at Advantage Physical Therapy & Wellness, P.C., in September.
Born and raised in south Florida, she pursued her undergraduate studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison and went to Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, for her graduate work. She will help people rehabilitate from both acute and chronic injuries.

Herald editors join journalism groups
Two editors with The Durango Herald were elected earlier this month to leadership positions, one with an international journalism organization and the other with a national open-government coalition.
Bill Roberts, Herald editorial page editor, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Inter American Press Association at the organization’s annual General Assembly held Oct. 17-21 in Santiago, Chile. The Inter American Press Association (Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa) is a nonprofit organization devoted to defending freedom of speech and freedom of the press across the Americas.
Don Lindley, editor of the Herald, was elected to a two-year term as vice president of the National Freedom of Information Coalition during the group’s annual meeting at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida. The NFOIC is a nonpartisan alliance of citizen-driven state freedom of information organizations, academic and First Amendment centers, journalistic societies and attorneys. Its purpose is to protect and advance the public’s right to open government by providing training, legal aid, information services and financial support to state open-government groups.
Shane Dawson receives designation
Shane Dawson, owner/broker of United Country Elevation Real Estate Co. has been awarded the Accredited Land Consultant designation of the REALTORS Land Institute.

LPEA announces promotion, hire
After completing the two-year Apprentice Dispatch program, Rachel Killinen has earned full status as a dispatcher at La Plata Electric Association. Also, Journeyman Lineman Aaron Renner has joined the dispatch team.
LPEA’s dispatch team oversees LPEA’s system operations. Dispatchers monitor power flows and voltage, field calls when problems occur within LPEA’s service area, trouble-shoot outages and dispatch crews to restore power.

Laura Marchino earns designation
Laura Lewis Marchino, assistant director of Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado, Inc. in Durango, earned the designation of Certified Economic Developer – a national recognition that denotes a mastery of principal skills in economic development, professional attainment and a commitment to personal and professional growth.
The exam was administered by the International Economic Development Council on Oct. 18 and 19 in Fort Worth, Texas.
The designation recognizes qualified and dedicated practitioners in the economic-development field and sets the standard of excellence within the profession.
