Region 9 announces new board member

The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado announces the addition of JJ Sanders to its board of directors.

Sanders retired to Bayfield after almost 40 years working with Lucent Technology (AT&T) in Oklahoma. After moving to Bayfield in 2007, Sanders has worked at Mercy Regional Medical Center as a security officer, Annie’s Orphans and currently serves as a Bayfield town trustee and will represent the town on the Region 9 Board.

Region 9 is a public-private partnership that promotes and coordinates economic development efforts in five Colorado counties. The next board meeting will be Sept. 25.

Bayfield librarian receives award

Elizabeth Von Tauffkirchen at the Pine River Library in Bayfield is the winner of the Colorado Association of Libraries 2014 Lucy Schweers Award.

Von Tauffkirchen was chosen for the award for exceeding expectations in her job. The Lucy Schweers Award is given annually to recognize paralibrarians – a professional staff member who has librarian-like responsibilities but does not hold master’s degree in library science – displaying “outstanding leadership and service.” In 2007, Von Tauffkirchen began working at the library full-time as the children’s services coordinator. Since that time, the children’s programming has increased significantly; from 2007 through 2013, annual attendance at her programs was up 182 percent.

Aside from in-library literacy events, Von Tauffkirchen also has developed outreach programs for local schools and in-home day care programs. This October, Von Tauffkirchen will officially receive her award at the annual CAL conference in Loveland. Von Tauffkirchen has been at the Pine River Library for more than seven years. Starting out as a contract Storytime provider, Von Tauffkirchen created literacy activities for both weekly Storytimes and also for the library’s summer reading program.
