Bring your paper to Shred Day on May 28

Shred Day will take place from 10 a.m. to noon May 28 at the Durango Chamber of Commerce office in Santa Rita Park.

Participants can shred any unwanted documents with personal information. There is a suggested donation of $5 with a limit of four boxes. Members or customers who bring more will have to pay an additional $5 per box. Box size is copier-paper size or smaller. Papers must be out of folders, and binder clips should be removed. Donations will benefit Trails 2000.

Job training geared toward seniors

SER Jobs For Progress, a federally funded job-training program, announces the availability of several openings for paid, job-training positions.

The program is available to senior citizens who are economically challenged and unable to find work because of a lack of job skills. It offers participants income while they learn new skills. Seniors will be placed in part-time, work-experience assignments that will enhance their opportunities for employment. The U.S. Department of Labor has funded this program for 51 years and is committed to recruit, train and place eligible seniors in subsidized training. The program is accepting applications for enrollment in La Plata, Montezuma and Archuleta counties. The program is also in need of nonprofit organizations and city, county and government agencies that would like to participate in the program and receive the benefit of free help, paid for by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Axis Health has new faces

Axis Health System, a private, nonprofit organization serving the health-care needs of Southwest Colorado, welcomes these new staff members to its management team:

Christie Ilg-Salter, pediatric nurse practitioner, joins the school-based health-care teams at Florida Mesa Elementary School and Durango High School. She will provide comprehensive health care to La Plata County students.

Sean D. Evans will be the clinical manager of child and adolescent behavioral health, which provides leadership to the child and adolescent behavioral health-care team to deliver service to regional children and youth.

Babies can now jam in Guitar Dojo classes

The Guitar Dojo, 1309 East Third Ave., Suite 12, announces the addition of a music class for babies from infant to 3 years and an adult.

Classes will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. or 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Children will develop academic skills including focus, memory, literacy and counting; musical skills and physical skills; and character skills, such as empathy, sharing and taking turns.

The Guitar Dojo is owned by Ruth Cutcher, who has a music degree, has spent more than 10 years teaching music and guitar and has spent more than 30 years as a performing musician. Cutcher is the only Suzuki-guitar teacher in a 150-mile radius.

Joe Keck receives award

The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center at Fort Lewis College announces that retiring director Joe Keck was awarded the Excellence and Innovation Award for the State of Colorado by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The award was presented by Frances Padilla, deputy director, SBA Colorado District Office, at a luncheon on May 6 at the Aurora Summit Conference and Event Center.

For 13 years, Keck has been director of the Southwest Colorado SBDC hosted by Fort Lewis College.

The Southwest Colorado SBDC offers free and low-cost consulting and training to local small-business owners, both new startups as well as existing businesses.

Bedhead Coffeehouse announces its opening at 929A Colorado Highway 3.

The specialty third-wave coffee shop will host its grand opening from Friday to Monday with these events:

Friday: Coffee tasting at 10:30 a.m., games at noon, Tarot card readings at 3:30 p.m. and music and poetry at 4:30 p.m. The business also will have extended hours from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Saturday: Coffee tasting at 10:30 a.m., games at noon, Tarot card readings at 2 p.m., music and poetry at 4 p.m., speed dating at 5 p.m. and Latin dance party with Sara Illsley at 6 p.m. Extended hours will be from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Sunday: Coffee tasting at 10:30 a.m., games at noon, Tarot card readings at 2 p.m. and music and poetry at 3 p.m. Extended hours will be from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday: Coffee tasting at 10:30 a.m., final judging of bedhead photos at noon, Tarot card readings at 2 p.m. and music and poetry at 3 p.m.

The business will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The coffeehouse will focus on quality via micro-lot roasters with emphasis on freshness, bean quality, taste and consistency. The business is owned by Patrick Booth.

CIT officers of the year recognized

Crisis Intervention Team of Southwest Colorado is a regional initiative designed to improve the way law enforcement and the community respond to people experiencing a mental-health crisis.

The program fosters strong collaboration between law enforcement, behavioral-health providers and individuals and families in local communities. Each year, the program recognizes outstanding CIT officers with the CIT Officer of the Year award.

This year’s recipients of the award are Sgt. Dave Peterson with the Durango Police Department and Deputy Mike Morris with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

These individuals were honored for their outstanding contribution in a crisis situation at the annual Crisis Intervention Team Training.
