Examine safety with Durango Fire

Durango Fire Protection District has developed a Life Safety Self-Inspection program for businesses identified at ‘low-risk’ for fire and life-safety hazards.

The program provides an opportunity for the DFPD and the Durango business community to work together to provide a higher level of fire and life safety. The program’s focus is to offer fire and life safety self-inspections to the low-risk businesses within the city, while keeping business disruptions to a minimum.

The self-inspection program has selected businesses that are statistically at a lower risk for fire. These include smaller business occupancies such as accounting offices, law offices, engineering offices, holistic health offices, etc. Although the selected businesses are classified as low-hazard occupancies, the fire department believes it is important to provide these businesses with appropriate information regarding the fire code and safety issues. In addition, the fire department believes that all businesses need to meet a reasonable level of fire and life safety standards for the benefit of the entire community.

Personal property declaration schedule

All persons owning, possessing or controlling taxable personal property with a total actual value greater than $7,300 (per owner, per county) on Jan. 1 are required to report the personal property to the assessor by April 15.

Personal Property Declaration Schedules have been mailed to every person, business or company known to own, possess or control taxable personal property in La Plata County.

Non-receipt of a declaration schedule does not excuse taxpayers from declaring taxable personal property to the assessor. People who have not received a declaration schedule and own personal property with a value greater than $7,300 should call 382-6231. If a declaration schedule is not filed by April 15, the assessor will establish a taxable value based on the “best information available” and add a penalty of up to 25 percent of assessed value for any omitted property that is subsequently discovered.
