LPEA announces new appointments

The Operations Department of La Plata Electric Association has a new journeyman lineman, new electronic specialists and a new fleet mechanic.

Journeyman lineman Tim Lee worked for 12 years with the Texas-based transmission and distribution company Oncor.

Electronic specialist and 21-year LPEA veteran Kenny Sutherlin was an electrician before coming to LPEA. His experience includes line location as well as previous roles as a staking engineer and electronic technician.

Electronic specialist Joe Frankland was an engineer for iHeartRadio in Albuquerque before joining LPEA. He has an associate’s degree in electrical engineering and technology.

Curtis Piccoli is a fleet mechanic at LPEA. His experience includes 10 years with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, where he serviced the support equipment for railroad operations. He also has 16 years experience with La Plata County’s fleet.

Startup and investor event to be held

The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs, SCAPE, is hosting a startup showcase and investor social from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the student Union Ballroom at Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

SCAPE is designed to help create more high-growth, job-creating companies in Southwest Colorado by providing education, mentoring and access to funding for startups and early-stage companies.

Mind’s Eye Movement relocates office

Mind’s Eye Movement, a local Pilates studio, has relocated to 1970 East Third Ave., Suite 203C in the Riverside Professional Building north of the Public Library.

Pilates strives to create a uniformly developed body. It also addresses chronic pain, joint and spinal issues, injuries and postoperative rehab.

Fed funds to help San Juan County

The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado announced it will receive $57,809 in economic adjustment assistance funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.

The funds will help economic recovery efforts in San Juan County, and will also be used to hire a recovery coordinator to assist local businesses.

The Silverton community is expected to undergo tremendous changes as a result of the Gold King Mine spill and impending Superfund designation.

San Juan County, the town of Silverton, Silverton School District and Region 9 will match the EDA’s funding.

Farmers Insurance announces new agent

There is a new agent in town for Farmers Insurance. Agent Greg Woodbury will be located at Farmers Insurance’s Woodbury Agency at 2223 Main Ave.

Woodbury has been with Farmers Insurance for several years. He got his start at Farmers offices in Bodo Industrial Park. He can be reached at 403-8500.

Brownfield properties workshop offered

Region 9 Economic Development District along with Community Builders and Kansas State University is hosting a Tools and Strategies for Reinvestment and Redevelopment of Potential Brownfield Properties workshop in Durango and Pagosa Springs.

Both workshops will be held Aug. 17, with the Pagosa Springs session from 8 to 11 a.m. in the West Conference Room at the Ross Aragon Community Center, 451 Hot Springs Blvd., and the Durango event from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Sunlight Room at the Durango Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Brownfields are commercial properties affected by real or perceived environmental contamination. Information for property cleanup, redevelopment and reinvestment of commercial properties will be provided.

The workshops are aimed at business owners interested in assessing their properties, real estate agents selling possibly contaminated properties, bankers that need to finance such properties and governments.
