KOA Holiday receives award
The Durango KOA Holiday has earned the 2016 KOA President’s and Founder’s awards from Kampgrounds of America Inc.
The awards were presented Nov. 18 at KOA’s annual International Convention in Daytona Beach, Florida. The KOA President’s Awards are presented annually to campgrounds that receive high scores in customer service from their campers, and also receive high scores in KOA’s annual Campground Quality Review. KOA surveys hundreds of thousands of campers each year regarding their KOA camping experience, and those surveys are used as a basis for the awards.

El Pomar makes additions to council
Beth Drum, senior vice president of Alpine Bank, has been invited to join El Pomar Foundation’s Southwest Regional Council.
El Pomar, based in Colorado Springs, utilizes regional partnerships across the state of Colorado to provide local expertise on funding needs in rural communities. Other council members include Durango Mayor Dean Brookie and Silverton School Superintendent Kim White.
Drum has served at Alpine Bank of Durango since 1996. In addition, she has served on the board of Mercy Health Foundation, the fundraising committee for Mercy Regional Medical Center, the board of the Women’s Resource Center, and the board of Durango Chamber of Commerce. In 2014, Drum received the Morley Ballantine Award for her work in supporting women and girls in the community.
El Pomar Foundation also invited Joe Keck of Cortez, former director of Small Business Development Center; Rebecca Larson of Dolores, OMNI Institute Regional Prevention Consultant; and Lisa Scott of Pagosa Springs, community volunteer. The four will begin their service to the Southwest Regional Council in the first quarter of 2016.

Financial statement workshop offered
The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and the Durango Public Library will present a workshop titled “A Road Map to Your Financial Report” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 2 in the program room of the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
People will learn how to read financial reports effectively beginning with the balance sheet and ending with the use of financial ratios to analyze financial statements. Content will include the basics of financial statement analysis, cash-flow analysis, and what areas signal a need for further investigation. Attendees will learn to understand the numbers on a basic balance sheet and income statement. In addition, they will learn to understand what the bottom line means and what to look for when inconsistencies occur in the financial statements. An overview of cash flow and its importance to the business and an overview of financial ratios also will be discussed.
The workshop is free and is limited to the first 25 students who register.

David Waller joins Academy Mortgage
David Waller has joined Paul Root at Academy Mortgage Corporation as a mortgage-loan officer.
Root and Waller will work as a team providing mortgages for new purchases and refinances. Root’s 36 years in the mortgage-lending industry and Waller’s 27 years in the Durango business community will blend to make a customer-centered mortgage-lending team.

La Plata Electric promotes two
Longtime La Plata Electric Association staff members Dan Harms and Linda Looman have been promoted to new positions within the cooperative.
Formerly systems engineer, Harms is now manager of rates, technology and energy policy, overseeing energy policy development, financial analysis and rates, information technology and systems operations and planning. Harms, a 30-year Durango resident who was an LPEA scholarship recipient and interned with the cooperative while studying electrical engineering at Fort Lewis College and Colorado State University, has served full time at LPEA as an electrical engineer since 1995.
Looman, who has served as human resources director since 2003, is now manager of member relations and human resources, adding oversight of all customer and member relations to her human resources responsibilities. Looman is a 37-year Durango resident and a graduate of Fort Lewis College with a degree in business administration.

LPEA announces new staff engineer
Rachel Schur Wagner has joined the La Plata Electric Association engineering team as a new staff engineer.
Raised in Pagosa Springs, Wagner returns to Southwest Colorado after four years in Portland, Oregon, working in the electric utility industry with consulting firm HDR and Bonneville Electric Power Association. She completed her degree in mechanical engineering at Colorado State University in 2010 after attending Fort Lewis College for general course study.
For the past 10 years Wagner has been active with the Engineers Without Borders program volunteering her time to assist rural villages in Southeast Asia and South and Central America.
