Economic agency lands a federal grant

The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado Inc. received a Rural Business Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs.

The grant will help support the SCAPE program, which offers in-depth mentoring, office space and equity investment to help new ventures enter markets and raise capital. Since beginning in 2013, the program has worked with 15 local businesses and created 36 jobs in Southwest Colorado.

Local companies can apply for the 2017 SCAPE program starting Sept. 1.

Purgatory hires VP of mountain operations

Purgatory Resort recently hired a new vice president of mountain operations to oversee management of lift operations, lift maintenance, slope maintenance, snowmaking, ski patrol, terrain parks, vehicle maintenance and summer activities.

Ed Youmans comes to Durango from the Mt. Hood, Oregon, area. Youmans has held positions such as a chief operating officer, general manager and mountain operations manager at several other ski resorts.

Youmans has worked in the ski resort industry for more than 32 years, first starting as a lift operator in 1984.

Ski Town Computing hires manager

Ski Town Computing, headquartered in Steamboat Springs, has hired Becky Milner to manage the day-to-day operations at its Apple service center, 1304 Main Ave.

Alpine Bank announces promotions

Alpine Bank has promoted Andrew Karow from San Juan Regional president to the senior executive team’s chief digital officer.

With this change, the San Juan region – Delta, Montrose, Ouray, Ridgway and Telluride – is merging with Durango, and Durango Regional President Mike Burns will now oversee the entire region, including Delta, La Plata, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel counties.

Karow’s banking career started with Alpine Bank in the Vail Valley in 1996.

Karow joined Alpine Bank Telluride as president in 2006 and became the San Juan regional president in 2008. In 2014, Karow became manager for Alpine Bank Wealth Management. Karow is now responsible for all client-facing digital and electronic functions of the bank.

Del Sol under new ownership

Del Sol of Durango was recently purchased by Eileen and Darrell Maddox of Durango.

The store, which is located at 858 Main Ave., will continue to offer a full line of Del Sol Brand color-changing apparel and accessories and an expanded line of sustainable Cariloha bamboo clothing and linens.

Glass repair business comes to Cortez

Cortez native Vickie Medina is opening Axl’s Glass in a warehouse at 42 North Beech St. in Cortez.

The new business offers windshield replacement, rock-chip repair and window-regulator repairs. Window-tinting services may be offered as well

After a 14-year career in the medical field, Medina said she decided to come home and pursue a business dream in the automotive field.

Funding applications due for nonprofits

The town of Bayfield provides funding to support local nonprofit organizations every year, contingent on available revenue.

Applications for financial support for 2017 are now being accepted. The application deadline is Aug. 12.
