Western Refining helps fight muscular disease
Western Refining – and its Giant, Mustang and Sun Dial convenience stores in Southwest Colorado – helped raise more than $379,000 for the fight against muscle disease during the third annual “Make a Muscle, Make a Difference” mobile campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Twelve Giant, Mustang and Sun Dial retailers located throughout the area participated in the promotion to help save and improve the lives of children and adults affected by muscle disease by raising funds for clinical care, support services and MDA summer camp.
The stores are a subsidiary of Western Refining based in Tempe, Ariz.
Medical services for families living in the Durango area are provided through the University of Colorado (Aurora), The Children’s Hospital Colorado (Aurora) and nearby University of New Mexico Hospital (Albuquerque).

Wells Fargo Advisors announce new hire
The Durango branch of Wells Fargo Advisors announces that Justin Fierstein has joined the firm as a financial adviser.
Prior to joining Wells Fargo Advisors, he served as an account manager at Tru-Stile Doors in Denver for two years. A graduate of University of Colorado, Denver with a degree in business administration, Fierstein majored in management and minored in finance. He is a member of the Young Professionals of Durango, Durango Chamber of Commerce and the Durango Old Car Club.

Boys, Girls Club announces unit director
The Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County introduces its new unit director, Jenn Bartlett.
She returned to the Boys & Girls Club movement after providing several years of service to Southwest Conservation Corps & Conservation Legacy as the director of member development. Her Boys & Girls Club career began with the Boys & Girls Club of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. She continues to spend much of her personal time on youth development, volunteering with other youth-serving organizations boards and committees as well as directly mentoring teens through a variety of capacities.
In addition, she’s a graduate of Leadership La Plata, the AMEX Leadership Academy and BGCA’s Leadership University. As an alumnus from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, she majored in parks and recreation management.

Gott Bro’s moves northern location
Gott Bro’s Orchard & Produce announces its north Durango retail location has moved from 30th and Main Avenue to 3478 Main Ave. at Botanical Concepts Garden Center, across from the Cornerstone Building and Durango’s Joe’s Coffee kiosk.
The business’s south location is across from Walmart at the Exxon Station. The business is owned by Bruce Gott, who is an artist and orchardist. Gott has grown more than 50 varieties of apples in La Plata County since 1982. The retail locations offer fresh fruit and produce. The shops are currently offering Colorado sweet cherries and will soon offer Olathe sweet corn, field-ripened tomatoes, Colorado ripe peaches, farm-fresh vegetables and, in September, Gott Bro’s apples and homemade apple cider.
LPEA announces new journeymen
Veteran journeyman linemen Ryan Carman, Bryon Kelly and Faron Sullivan have joined the operations team at La Plata Electric Association.
In the electric-utility industry, linemen are responsible for constructing and maintaining electric power transmission and distribution lines and facilities.
All three linemen will be based out of LPEA’s Durango headquarters.

La Plata Electric announces promotion
Warehouse Storekeeper Robert Lloyd has been promoted to inventory control specialist at La Plata Electric Association, overseeing inventory and assisting LPEA’s line crews with materials needed for repair and maintenance of the electric system.
A longtime La Plata County resident, he joined the LPEA Operations team in 2012, coming to the cooperative from the line construction company WESODI, where he had worked for six years. Serving first as a groundman at WESODI, he was eventually promoted to equipment operator. He also filled in temporarily in LPEA’s warehouse in 2007-2008.
Originally from Texas, he moved to La Plata County in 1983 to assist his grandparents on their ranch near Saul’s Creek. He then worked a variety of jobs, eventually hired on at south City Market, where he was employed for 18 years before joining WESODI.

Businesses sought for library program
The Durango Public Library will celebrate National Library Card Month and present a chance for businesses to sign up for the second annual Library Card – Discount Card program.
Businesses can offer an incentive of their choosing to customers who may visit the business and show their library card. More than 30,000 area residents hold library cards. The deadline to sign up is July 25.
