Dave Mitchell to speak Feb. 12

The Durango Chamber of Commerce and the Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado will host “The Power of Understanding People Hollywood Style” on Feb. 12 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

A reception will take place at 5:30 p.m., and the keynote speech will take place at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature speaker Dave Mitchell. The cost is $35 per person. Reservations are required.

Four Corners Broadcasting will host the Durango Chamber of Commerce Snowdown Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Dave Rakita announces retirement

Dave Rakita, co-owner of Rakita Tomsic Physical Therapy, announces his retirement after a 42-year physical-therapy career serving Durango and the surrounding areas.

Rakita has been the longest practicing PT in the area, working at Community and Mercy hospitals from 1972-1982, then opening his own practice in 1982. After practicing independently for 20 years, Rakita and Ellen Tomsic joined forces to open their practice, Rakita Tomsic Physical Therapy, in 2004.

Rakita is well-known for his athletic career, as well as active involvement in local sports communities. His civic service includes board positions and support of the Durango Swim Club, Purgatory National ski patrol 1973-81 (patrol leader 1975-77) and others.

Patricia Arnold accepting patients

Patricia Arnold, a registered nurse and certified in oriental medicine, is now taking patients at Horse Gulch Health Campus, 270 East Eight Ave., Suite 205, North Building in Durango.

Light Touch Acupuncture will be co-located inside ARIA Medical Massage Therapy. Arnold received her master’s degree in 2005 in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, and she has more than 30 years experience as a registered nurse.

Bear Smart receives donation

Bear Smart Durango, a local nonprofit, announces it has received a donation from Russell Planning & Engineering Inc. as part of the organization’s corporate sponsorship program.

The nonprofit is grateful for the $250 contribution, which will be used in support of efforts in reducing human-bear conflicts in the community.

Rod Humble announces retirement

Parady Tax Solutions and Parady Financial Group announce the retirement of Rod Humble.

A celebration with clients and friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Humble started Accountancy of Durango 43 years ago in 1972, right out of college. He graduated from Fort Lewis College with a degree in business management and major in psychology and returned to school for a second degree in accounting in 1972. Over the years, Humble has helped hundreds of clients with tax preparation, accounting and bookkeeping services. He served in the Army Reserve as a staff sergeant, as chairman of the Durango Planning Commission and for 12 years on the Durango-La Plata County Airport Commission.

Bob Williamson will assume responsibility for Humble’s clients.

The Durango Area Tourism Office will host its first annual Tourism Industry Briefing from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Feb. 4 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The tourism office will introduce team members, sector representatives, board members and plans for 2015.
