Business founder wins award in LA
Meridane Design founder and 40-year Durango resident Sally Short recently won the Innovative Woman in Business Award at the National Women’s Success Summit in Los Angeles.
Short won the award for her line of inspirational jewelry, better known as Zymbol. Created in Durango, Zymbol is a unique design that contains every letter of the alphabet and every number hidden within it. For every Zymbol purchased, one is gifted to a hospitalized child. Short credits her and her family’s mission to inspire children in the hospital for winning the award. Short runs the company with her two children who both graduated from Durango High School.

Colorado FreeSkier opens in Durango
Colorado FreeSkier announces its opening in Durango at 1430 Main Ave.
The business will be owned by Steve Taglialatela and will be managed by Noel Henry. The shop will open Saturday. The retail store will offer ski apparel, equipment and skis, as well as demo skis. The local ski shop will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It is the second Colorado FreeSkier store to open, the first was in Crested Butte more than eight years ago.

FLC class holds survey for chamber members
The Durango Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Fort Lewis College senior level marketing class will conduct a survey of chamber members available at http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e8icgfg9hnw0fslm/a013fhnxd5oa0/questions.
The input will help students in their research. The deadline to complete the survey is 5 p.m. Friday.
Human-resource managers to meet
Pam Boyd will present a half-day seminar called “Creating Drama-Free Workplaces” from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 20 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio, for the Durango Area Human Resource Managers in Durango.

Kinder Morgan donates to canyons alliance
Kinder Morgan CO² has donated $10,000 to Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance specifically earmarked for the Monument Cultural Site Stewardship Program.
Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance, founded in February 2013, is a nonprofit partner dedicated to the support of Bureau of Land Management Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and the Anasazi Heritage Center. The Monument Cultural Site Stewardship Program consists of trained volunteers who monitor archaeological sites on the monument for signs of vandalism and degradation stemming from natural, human and animal causes.

Business forum to take place Jan. 8
Wells Fargo Bank and Fort Lewis College will present the 22nd annual Southwest Business Forum from 3 to 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Fort Lewis College Concert Hall.

Grant money available for small-business loans
The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado, Inc. received an award of $500,000 through an extension of the Community Development Block Grant contract between the State Office of Economic Development and International Trade and La Plata County on behalf of the five counties in Southwest Colorado.
The grant is one of several sources of funding for the Business Loan Fund program that provides “gap” financing to support job creation and retention. In addition to larger loans of $100,000 or more, the grant program provides micro-loans of $100,000 or less to small business and entrepreneurs that can include up to $5,000 in grants for technical assistance.
