Locals honored Feb. 6 in Denver

Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center clients and advisers were honored twice at the Feb. 6 reception at the Governor’s Mansion in Denver.

Cindy Dvergsten, Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center adviser and Leading Edge instructor, was submitted by Joe Keck as a candidate for Consultant of the Year for the state of Colorado SBDC network and won. Dvergsten has taught NX Level Leading Edge Tilling the Soil classes for the past few years, attended numerous meetings on behalf of the SBDC in Montezuma and Dolores counties and met with 37 clients in 2013.

Ken Beck took first place in the state for his business plan for intermountain equine sports medicine. His plan was chosen as the best out of more than 300 entrepreneurs who participated in Leading Edge classes during the year. He won second place in the Leading Edge for Entrepreneurs class in Cortez last year facilitated by Dvergsten. He spent hours researching the viability of the business and doing detailed financials.

Susan Terrill-Flint named to national office

Susan Terrill-Flint, owner of Legacy La Plata Memoirs, has been named vice president of the national professional association – the Association of Personal Historians – for a two-year term.

Terrill-Flint has served on the Fort Lewis Alumni board of directors, two of them as president. She served as director of human resources for GCC Energy and Durango School District 9-R. She writes the “Legacy Profile” column for Boomers and Beyond.

Terrill-Flint is a native of Southwest Colorado, has a degree from Fort Lewis College and a masters from the University of Wyoming. Legacy La Plata Memoirs assists individuals in writing a personal history and writes histories of businesses.

Mountain View TLC has nutrition consultant

Marissa Kleinsmith of Paint Your Plate Nutrition is now providing nutrition consulting services at Mountain View TLC.

In addition to Kleinsmith, the practice includes family practice physician Dr. Kicki Searfus, behavioral health counselor Judith Vanderryn and exercise physiologist Kevin Dehlinger.

Kleinsmith received her masters degree in whole foods nutrition from Bastyr University before completing her dietetic internship throughout the Four Corners. Her services at Mountain View TLC include nutrition assessment and coaching, as well as hands on education, such as guided food shopping, pantry make-overs and cooking demonstrations.
