The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host Tuesday Talk at 7:45 a.m. Dec. 1 at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.

This is a casual networking event.

Business preserves local family history

John Peel of Durango has started his own business, John Peel – Life Preserver, which creates stories and books about the lives of individuals, families and businesses. The focus is on celebrating people’s lives, and passing on family stories and history to future generations.

Peel is a former award-winning Durango Herald human-interest columnist. He worked for the Herald from 1993-2015, spending the last 17 years writing the weekly column.

The stories centered on the people of Southwest Colorado, often on history and family legacies.

The focus of the business is to help people who have the desire, but perhaps not the time, to put their family’s stories and photos into a format that will preserve them for years to come.

Maria’s announces new bookseller

Maria’s Bookshop welcomes bookseller Meghan Doenges to its staff.

Doenges is studying at Fort Lewis College seeking a liberal arts degree with a focus on sociology, English and writing.

An aspiring poet and creative nonfiction writer who grew up in Batavia, Illinois, Doenges also is an avid backpacker, explorer, rafter and lover of the San Juan Mountains.

Strategic planning training available

Community Resource Center invites executive directors and nonprofit board members in the Southwest region to register for a one-day strategic planning training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Executive directors and board members will leave with the tools and resources necessary to craft a compelling and relevant strategic plan that is practical, measurable and can be implemented without the cost of hiring an outside consultant.

The training will cover: recognizing of what a strategic plan is and is not; understanding different processes by which strategic planning can be accomplished; identifying the core elements that are the foundations of a strategic plan; crafting compelling goals, objectives and activities; and developing strategies for implementation.

The training will be taught by Maria Fabula, president and CEO, and Rebecca Gorrell, director of education and leadership development.

The cost is $55 for people who register by Dec. 9 and $70 otherwise.

Mandy Woosley joins FredrickZink

Mandy Woosley has joined FredrickZink & Associates, an accounting, tax and business consulting firm in Durango, as accounting manager.

Woosley will concentrate her efforts in the area of client payroll and monthly accounting services for clients.

A Colorado native, she has more than 20 years of combined experience in accounting, bookkeeping and office management, with particular expertise in the oil and gas and construction industries.

Most recently, Woosley was a senior accountant for a company in the manufacturing sector. She previously held ownership in two oil and gas corporations, and was responsible for general ledgers, financial reporting and statements, and other financial duties.

In addition to accounting services, Woosley managed payroll cycles for multiple companies and initially began her professional career as a teller/proof operator for a Colorado bank.

She majored in business accounting at Pueblo Community College.
