Eye clinic announces new physician
Four Corners Eye Clinic, 575 Rivergate Lane, Suite 212, announces the addition of Dr. Karyn Bourke to its practice.
Bourke received her medical degree from Medical College of Georgia’s School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She completed her internal medicine internship, ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, specifically at the John A. Moran Eye Center. She then practiced as a retinal specialist in Oregon prior to joining Four Corners Eye Clinic.
Bourke is board-certified and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

Small business nominations sought
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Colorado District Office is accepting nominations for several award categories, including the Small Business Person of the Year.
Awards will be made at the state, regional and national level in most categories. Nominations can be submitted by almost any entity, including the business owner themselves. Nominations can be submitted at http://awards.sba.gov. The website provides information on the award categories and nomination guidelines and makes it easier to submit and track submissions of nomination packages. Nominations can still be submitted as a paper document by contacting the Colorado Small Business Week coordinator for an office address.
Nominations must be submitted no later than 1 p.m., Jan. 5.

Marketing workshop to be held Nov. 12
The Durango Chamber of Commerce, ConocoPhillips and La Plata Electric Association will host national speaker, trainer and consultant Jay Handler for a “8 M’s of Marketing” workshop from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 12 in the ballroom of the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
Whether participants need help with their holiday marketing plan or their 2015 marketing plan, Handler will break it down into eight steps. Using these eight guidelines, in the correct order, will ensure a more effective and efficient use of time, energy and money. The cost is $25 for chamber members and $35 for nonmembers. Entrepreneur program seeks applicants
The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs is accepting applications for the January 2015 program.
SCAPE supports the creation and development of job-creating companies in Southwest Colorado by offering this accelerator program, which provides funding, education and mentoring. SCAPE helps grow startup companies or take established businesses to the next level. Each company is eligible for an equity investment to build their company, along with free office space. They also receive mentorship. The program length, curriculum focus and investment options are flexible depending on the needs of the business.

Region 9 announces new board members
The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado announces additions to its board of directors.
Lana Hancock, Larry Don Suckla and Clint Alley have joined the board. Hancock is the administrator for the town of Dolores, which she will represent. Suckla is a Montezuma County Commissioner, and Alley serves as a trustee for the town of Pagosa Springs. All three were elected at Region 9’s annual meeting, Sept. 25.
Region 9 is a public-private partnership that promotes and coordinates economic development efforts in five Colorado counties. The next board meeting will be Jan. 22.

Spaaah Shop seeking nominations of heros
Throughout October The Spaaah Shop and Day Spa is holding a “Nominate a Durango Hero” campaign.
The business wants to hear from the public about someone who has made a difference. It can be a personal story about someone who has changed a life, or it can be a local Durango figure who has been in a position to effect lots of lives. During the first week of November, the business will select three winners, and they will each receive a spa package as well as a gift basket from the retail store.

Shaw Solar announces that Ken Armstrong and Amanda Saunders have joined its team – Armstrong as a solar sales representative and Saunders as outreach coordinator.
Armstrong’s experience is in business, finance and sales. Saunders’ most recent background is in the nonprofit world, as she spent the past four years working at the Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency, also called 4CORE.

Facebook for business workshop available
A “Facebook for Biz” workshop will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce, 31 West Main in Cortez.
In this workshop, The Geeks will cover the basics of setting up a Facebook account exclusively for business use and building the page in a way that clearly identifies the brand. Topics will include: Changing logo and cover image; choosing a Web address; inviting friends to like the page; posting effective status updates; scheduling posts; using Facebook as a business; and analyzing page performance and audience with Insights.

Bayfield library hires director
The Board of Trustees at the Pine River Library in Bayfield has chosen a former state library consultant and published author to be the new library director.
Shelley Walchak was hired following a unanimous vote by the board. Walchak will replace Amy Dodson, who announced her resignation in September. The former senior consultant to Public Libraries in Colorado, Walchak spent four years working with libraries throughout the state, including the Pine River Library. Before that, she served as the Continuing Education Director with the Colorado Library Consortium. Walchak also worked at Fort Lewis College from 2001-2005.
Walchak has started working at the library on a part-time basis. She will officially take over as library director in mid-November.
