Claudia Williams awarded designation

Garden center moves to new location

Botanical Concepts Garden Center announces its new location at 3478 Main Ave.

The center is owned by Diana Wilkening, who has a degree in agricultural botany and a master’s in education. Wilkening has worked in horticulture for more than 35 years and has taught college horticulture.

The seasonal garden center is open from April to September offering local hardy plants to the community and teaching people how to successfully grow in a high-elevation climate. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The quality plant material offered by the center is hardened off, ready to plant and suited for the local area, which comprises Zones 1-5.

Free document shredding to be offered

The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host “Shred Day” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21 at the Santa Rita Park chamber offices.

Colorado Document Security will be on hand to provide free on-site document shredding. People can shred any unwanted documents with personal information. Staples or paperclips do not need to be removed. There is a limit of five boxes per person. Donations will be accepted for Hospice of Mercy.

Accelerator program accepting applications

The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs is accepting applications for its third program during May.

SCAPE’s objective is to support the creation and development of high-growth, job-creating companies in Southwest Colorado, by offering an accelerator program that provides funding, education and mentoring. Successful completion of the program should provide these ventures the ability to enter markets and raise capital. Each company receives an equity investment to build their company, along with free office space. At the end of the four-month program the graduating finalists will present their investor presentations.

Rapp Vending announces opening

Amy Rapp announces the opening of Rapp Vending LLC.

Rapp is looking to expand the business with additional vending machines throughout La Plata County. Rapp has worked for Purgatory Rentals and caretaking since 2000 as head housekeeper and assistant manager. She was the secretary of Durango BMX for seven years. Before that, she worked for Purgatory Ski Resort from 1988 to 2000. Rapp also owned the Weber Canyon Ranch Mercantile store on Main Avenue in 1992.

Anand McManus joins Keller Williams

The Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency announces an educational session with guest speaker James Mitchell from Renewablue and Fort Collins Board of Realtors.

Human-resource managers to meet

The Durango Area Human Resource Managers will meet from noon to 1 p.m. May 15 in the upstairs meeting room of Ska Brewing Co., 225 Girard St. in Bodo Industrial Park.

The format will be a round-table discussion, covering topics of interest to human-resource managers, as well as to those who have workplace duties that include employee supervision, benefits administration, recruitment and on-boarding. Jim Shoultz awarded Elks designation

Jim Shoultz, trustee chairman of the Durango Elks Lodge No. 507, has been awarded the designation of “District Officer of the Year 2013-2014” for the West District of Colorado.

Shoultz most recently was awarded as the Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 2013-2014 Officer of the Year. The award is conferred upon for “Dedicated and Meritorious Service to the Lodge.

The Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 is a fraternal organization of men and women. Elks invest in their communities through programs that help children, by undertaking projects that address unmet needs and by honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans. The Elks have several charity events, dances, dinners and open houses throughout the year.

Coffee & Conversation to be held Friday

The Durango Business Improvement District Coffee & Conversation will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Durango City Hall, 949 East Second Ave.

The focus will be “News you need as we go into the summer tourist season.” Reports will be provided by the city’s multi-modal coordinator Amber Blake, who will give an update on the Way to Go program, bicycle hitches and more; Durango Police Chief Jim Spratlen, who will review safety procedures and shoplifting precautions; Code Enforcement Officer Steve Barkley, who will cover business-owner guidelines for summer; and the BID with an overview of upcoming activities, including sidewalk vending, the iClean Day, flower barrel installation and the BID’s new effort for emergency communication.
