Caitlin Cannon is repurposing her inner trash.
The local musician has written and recorded “TrashCannon” and has taken the project to KickStarter to get the money required to get the album mixed, mastered and marketed.
“I feel so creatively fulfilled by it,” she said. “The record is called ‘TrashCannon’ because this record champions a lot of kinds of people who don’t necessarily have a voice.”
Songs on the album include “Mama’s a Hairdresser, Baby’s a Life Offender,” which talks about having a loved one in the prison system; and “Drink Enough” and “Deliver,” which address struggles with drinking and addiction. And “Going for the Bronze” was co-written with StillHouse Junkies’ Fred Kosack.
“I’m being honest with people about what those songs were, and stopped trying to disguise stuff,” Cannon said. “Things you’d kind of be ashamed of, you reclaim your trash and repurpose it.”
The album of all original material also pays homage to some of country music’s most iconic female performers. Cannon lists Loretta Lynn, Kacey Jones, Tammy Wynette, Bobbi Gentry, Kitty Wells, Dolly Parton, K.T. Olsen, The Dixie Chicks and many more as those who fought against gender bias and “laid the bedrock for young female artists to stand on.”
And because this is KickStarter, Cannon is offering a variety of incentives for those who contribute: T-shirts, albums, even earrings, are up for grabs.
She’ll even help you with your inner trash.
“One of the incentives I’m actually offering is, give me a song or a topic and I’ll repurpose your trash for you,” she said. “Let’s take your trash and turn it into something beautiful, which has been the whole reason I started writing songs in the first place.”
Cannon’s campaign expires Jan. 13, and she must achieve her goal of raising $10,000 in order to be able to use the funding to finish the album, which she has big plans for, she said.
“If I can, I want to tour it. I want to tour it nationally,” she said.
