A camper and car were destroyed in a fire started by a Coleman lantern and a propane stove Thursday evening in western La Plata County.
No one was badly hurt in the fire started around 8 p.m. on County Road 128 east of Kline, said Sgt. Jeff Blevans with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.
The truck camper was sitting on the ground and the man was cooking when the fire started, said Chief Chris Anderson with the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District.
The camper was sitting in a dense Pinon Juniper forest, but the trees were only singed, he said.
“It was on the ground being lived in,” he said.
The man cut his finger but was otherwise unharmed, he said.
Six firefighters responded to the fire, which was on private property, and kept it from spreading beyond the vehicles.
