BAYFIELD
If it weren’t for the Pagosa Springs goalkeeper, this one would’ve been over a lot sooner than it was.
Bayfield beat Pagosa Springs 4-0 on Tuesday night at Wolverine Country Stadium.
“Their goalie was outstanding,” Bayfield High School girls soccer head coach Jen Zelinski said. “She was by far their best player.”
Zelinski said the Wolverines had 38 shots, and she estimated Maria Campuzano saved about half of those.
MaxPreps.com went even further: The website reported Campuzano made 35 saves in the loss.
Bayfield (5-0, 4-0 Intermountain League) did manage to score two goals in the first half and two in the second to remain undefeated on the season. Pagosa Springs is 2-2-1 and 2-1-1 in the IML.
Bayfield led 2-0 at the half.
Maddy Duran scored two goals, and Meaghan Mooney scored two goals.
Durango, Mooney and Andrea Zelinski each managed at least 10 of those 38 shots, and Zelinski added a pair of assists.
Sonja Fleming and Grace Harvey also had assists in the Wolverines’ league win.
“We looked really good as a team,” coach Zelinski said.
“At least three out of our four goals came from passing combinations.”
And with a few girls injured, the Wolverines will be a few bodies short when Bayfield will play at Ignacio at 4 p.m. Friday.
“We can’t take anyone for granted,” coach Zelinski said.
