We are recent transplants to the Durango area but know there are a number of second homes in the region, many of which are used to generate income.
In almost every other state, most particularly in resort areas like ours, homeowners with second homes pay almost double the property taxes of the local residents. I’m not certain that is the case here in La Plata, but if we don’t currently charge a higher “non-resident” property tax and there is nothing preventing it from being applied, it might go some way to alleviating the budget shortfalls.
