Cancer Coalition dissolves after 20 years of service

After more than two decades of dedicated service, the Cancer Coalition of Southwest Colorado, a group of passionate women volunteers, has closed its doors. Serving La Plata, Archuleta, and San Juan counties, the coalition has been a beacon of hope for countless people navigating the challenges of cancer treatment.

Since its inception, the Cancer Coalition of Southwest Colorado has provided support to patients and their families, distributing over 30,000 gas cards to assist those traveling to treatment clinics. Additionally, it awarded hundreds of grants to help cover nonmedical expenses, alleviating some of the financial burdens faced by those undergoing cancer treatment.

As the organization dissolves, it is committed to ensuring that its mission continues. Remaining money will be transferred to the Cancer Support Community of Southwest Colorado, which will also take over operations at the Cancer Resource Center located in Mercy Hospital. CSC will continue distribution of gas cards at the Cancer Resource Center as well as at the Cancer Support Community office at 1701 Main Ave., Ste. C, in Durango.

CSC plans to expand the resources available at the Cancer Resource Center to local cancer patients, introducing programs such as nurse navigation, support groups and workshops aimed at fostering community support and resilience.

The dissolution of the Cancer Coalition marks the end of an era, but the spirit of support and compassion will continue through the Cancer Support Community.
