Cannis the OT hero for Skyhawks

Fort Lewis women’s soccer advances to RMAC title game

The Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team had plenty of chances.

Turns out, it only needed one.

Emma Cannis scored from 16 yards out 1 minute, 26 seconds into overtime to give the third-seeded Skyhawks a 1-0 win over No. 2 seed Metro State on Friday in the semifinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament in Golden.

“Wish we would’ve done something before that ... but when it comes down to it, obviously finishing it in the first minute and a half sort of ... put a period to the end of the night,” FLC head coach Damian Clarke said.

Cannis’ golden goal was her sixth of the season and came on FLC’s 14th shot and seventh on goal.

Metro State (12-4-3), meanwhile, mustered eight shots but forced FLC’s Caitlyn Espinosa to make just one save.

Junior forward Sam Weiss returned after missing a first-round win over UC-Colorado Springs with a head injury and assisted on the game winner.

FLC (16-4-0), however, was without starting central midfielder Jordan Hix, who suffered a high ankle sprain Wednesday, and Therese Romero was held out in the second half as a precaution with a tender hamstring.

FLC, ranked 24th nationally and second in the South Central Region, will meet top-seeded and fourth-ranked Colorado Mines for the title at noon Sunday in Golden.
