I recently read the letter to the editor from the Boulevard Neighborhood Association Board of Directors, as well as some previous letters, objecting to Next Step. I cannot fathom how the proponents for Next Step think it’s a great idea.
They know it will reduce parking spaces and the width of the center lane in order to widen the sidewalks by 3 feet. I ask, why? Change for the sake of change doesn’t make sense.
Some things need to stay the same. Why is it necessary to widen sidewalks and reduce traffic lanes? Committee members involved with considering these changes are not being responsible. They are not considering the valid objections of downtown businesses and local citizens.
And, again, why do they think it’s necessary to reconfigure every part of Durango? Tourists come to Durango to see a town with history, not some souped up version of a place they left. Stop Next Step and put your energy into something that is necessary.
