Car crashes into day care playground

No one hurt after driver apparently suffers seizure

A woman who appeared to be having a seizure drove through a fence and into the playground at Children’s Cornerstone day care center in Durango on Thursday. There were no children in the playground at the time.

The woman, driving a Mazda Protege, was treated at the scene at Florida Road and Holly Avenue.

She was identified as Christa Turnell, 42, of Durango. She will not be cited, said Durango Police Department Officer Ron Wysocki.

Witnesses said that Turnell appeared to be having a medical problem, perhaps a seizure, as she drove west on Florida Road toward town, said Sgt. Bobby Taylor with the police department.

The vehicle bounced from curb to median on Florida, then jumped the curb at the corner where the day care center is located, witnesses told police. The Protege took down an electrical post, went through an area landscaped with rock, smashed through the fence and stopped in the playground at Children’s Cornerstone, 2899 Holly Ave. The car traveled 121 feet off the road.

Police and Durango Fire & Rescue Authority personnel were at the scene, as was La Plata Electric Association, which came to make electrical line repairs.
