A single-car rollover closed a stretch of U.S. Highway 160 near Three Springs Boulevard on Tuesday, just east of Durango city limits.
The crash occurred about 10 a.m. when the driver of a black 1993 Subaru Legacy failed to slow down for a dump truck, said Trooper Nathan Selby, with the Colorado State Patrol.
The driver, Joseph Graff, 25, of Durango, was heading eastbound when he slammed on the brakes, swerved to the left, overcorrected to the right and turned the car sideways onto its driver’s side and onto its top, Selby said.
Graff, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured.
He was cited with careless driving.
The crash occurred in the right eastbound lane just east of Three Springs Boulevard. The dump truck was going in the same direction and slowed on an uphill incline, Selby said.
Both eastbound lanes were shut down and rerouted onto a left-turn lane for about an hour.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected.
“The driver just didn’t realize how slow the truck was going and gained on him too fast, and by the time he realized it, he overcorrected and slid sideways,” Selby said.
