Car flips on East Third Avenue

A man driving a green pickup on East Third Avenue crashed into a tree and rolled the vehicle about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Chase Gaumond, a student at Fort Lewis College, was the first one on the scene after the accident. Gaumond was driving behind the man when he heard a loud bang near 12th Street.

“His green pickup truck drove up onto a tree and completely flipped over,” Gaumond said. “As I approached the crash sight I put my flashers on, used my car to block the road, and made sure the guy was OK.”

Gaumond said the man driving was conscious, and, with the exception of a cut on his elbow, seemed to be unharmed.

Gaumond then called 911 and Durango police responded immediately.

The Durango Police Department had not filed an accident report as of 12:30 p.m., said Lt. Ray Shupe, spokesman for the department. And he did not expect anything to be filed until at least 9 p.m. Tuesday. He could not say if anyone was cited or if alcohol is suspected.
