I am writing to urge our community to support Ballot Issue 1A, which is crucial for the health and well-being of seniors in La Plata County. When the Senior Center opened its doors in 1978, city and county budgets were strong, thanks to sales tax and oil and gas revenues. However, the population of La Plata County has grown by 48% since then, with no increase in sales tax in 43 years.
Today, 27% of La Plata County residents, about 15,300 people, are over the age of 60. Many older adults rely on Senior Services for their health, social connection and quality of life. Services like Senior Transportation help those who cannot drive, access medical care, exercise programs, meals, caregiver support and other vital activities. For homebound seniors, Meals on Wheels provides essential nutrition, allowing them to remain in their homes and live independently for a much longer period of time.
Ballot Issue 1A proposes a modest increase – just 1 cent on the dollar. Importantly, 33% of this revenue would come from tourists. Without additional county funding, Senior Services will face severe cuts, reducing or eliminating programs that so many seniors depend on. Strong Senior Services benefit everyone in La Plata County.
Please consider your own elderly parents, neighbors and friends, and what services you yourself may need as you age in place in La Plata County. Please join me and vote “yes” on Ballot Issue 1A to ensure a healthier, more supportive community for all La Plata County residents.
