After the detailed reporting by the Herald about the archaeological digs taking place on Florida Mesa in the path of the realignment of US 550, it was very disappointing to see the critical and misleading cartoon on Monday’s editorial page (Sept. 16).
In past articles, the point was made that CDOT was aware of the high probability of finding artifacts, evidenced by exhaustive negotiations with land owners over several years. The appropriate protocol was followed by CDOT, with the greatest respect for the request of the tribes with regard to any human remains that might be found.
CDOT is also examining options to protect artifacts that will be buried underneath some stretches of roadway.
To suggest that CDOT proceeded with this project knowing, or pretending, that nothing was known or expected to be on that site is simply not true.
As the transportation commissioner for Southwest Colorado, I felt compelled to comment on this inaccurate depiction of the situation. I am speaking only for myself and not for the commission or CDOT.
