Castanha kicks up RMAC honor

Skyhawks’ kicker named week’s top special teamer

The leg that landed Fort Lewis College football the musket landed Kipp Castanha a different award of his own.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference named the FLC placekicker the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday after helping Fort Lewis top Adams State 27-24 in the annual Musket Game on Saturday.

Castanha recorded 13 of the Skyhawks’ 27 total points Saturday, connecting on four field goals and an extra point. His biggest kick came with the clock reading 0:00, a 24-yarder that capped a remarkable final drive for Fort Lewis and was set up by a personal foul penalty as time expired.

The junior from Rye, who just recently had assumed the full-time placekicking duties, also connected from 41, 35 and 27 yards.

The victory was FLC’s first in the series since 2010 and first at home since 1996. It also marked the first time Fort Lewis had won consecutive games since 2006, with the Skyhawks topping Western State 10-9 the week prior.

Chris Ashe of CSU-Pueblo ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Colorado Mesa to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. Trevor Boner of Black Hills State had 13 tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown to earn the RMAC’s top weekly defensive award.

Fort Lewis will take on Chadron State at noon Saturday in Chadron, Neb.
