Ignacio High School couldn’t have performed much better Day 1 of the regional tournament Friday in Grand Junction.
Ignacio has nine Bobcats in the wrestling tournament, and all nine ’Cats have lives in the semifinals.
“It was a good round for us,” said IHS head coach Cody Haga, who was proud but tempered his excitement for Day 2.
“The boys really showed up (Friday),” Haga said.
If they show up Saturday, the Bobcats could take a large haul to the CHSAA Class 2A Wrestling State Championships next weekend in Denver, too. Win one, and they’re in.
All of the Bobcats received first-round byes, and Ethan Appenzeller (126), Josh Gallegos (220) and Dalton Mickey (120) all received quarterfinal byes to reach Saturday’s semifinals.

Lorenzo Peña beat T.J. Richard of North Park at 138 pounds by a 14-10 decision in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
Isaac Peña beat Trenton Armintrout of Norwood at 145 pounds by a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
Miguel Perez beat Caleb Lawson of Rangley at 152 pounds by a 14-6 major decision in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
Blaine Mickey beat Everett Strazza-Whalen of Mancos at 170 pounds by technical fall in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
Christian Knoll beat Chase Rule of Meeker at 182 pounds by a 14-5 major decision in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
