Cattlemen hosting annual chuck wagon cook-off

Chuck wagons are authentic pieces of Western history, and the public is welcome to come see their crews at work at the Cattlemen Chuck Wagon Cook-Off on July 29.

The 14th annual La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's Association Chuck Wagon Cook-off will be held July 29 in the grove of trees south of La Plata County Fairgrounds.

Wagons will begin to arrive early in the morning of July 28. Cooking will begin the morning of July 29. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. July 29.

Six teams will compete this year to cook a traditional Western dinner with locally sourced ingredients that are similar to those used decades ago. They will cook over an open fire.

Locals teams that will compete are: Harry Baxstrom and his crew with their Poverty Flats wagon; Sandy Cooper and the Durango Cowboy Church; the Montoya Ranch Wagon, owned by Davin and Teresa Montoya; and Rodney and Kristi Carriker of Cortez with the Canyon Trails Ranch Wagon.

Two out-of-town entries are the Master for Rafter 76 owned by Monte Deckerd and Dave Wade with the Mountain Trails Chuck Wagon.

The Canyon Trails bunch will be coming in from south of Cortez with their team of draft horses. Joe Ice will provide the music, and a tent will be available in case of rain.

Tickets are available at Valley Feed & Ranch Supply, 39987 U.S. Highway 160 in Bayfield or Basin Coop, 26103 U.S. Highway 160 in Durango. Tickets are $20 for a complete meal of meat, potatoes, beans, fresh bread, a dessert and drink.

Tickets will be available at the door depending on availability, but the event usually sells out.
