Cawker leads a cast of ’Hawks

FLC lands 10 on All-WILA teams

Make it an even 10 for the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team on the all-league docket, including one big individual award winner.

Amanda Cawker was selected Defensive Player of the Year, and FLC landed two first-team members, four second-team members and four honorable mentions when the All-Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association teams were announced recently.

Cawker, a junior from Valley Center, Calif., was third in the WILA with 22 caused turnovers and was third overall and tops among field players with 39 groundballs. She also added a pair of goals on five shots as a defender while limiting her yellow cards to just one.

“I am so proud of Amanda,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said in a news release. “She is a player who is driven. She came into this season with the determination to make a difference, and she did.”

Joining Cawker on the first team was fellow FLC defender Katlyne Duffey. Duffey, a freshman from Plymouth, Minn., started all 12 games as a freshman and pulled in 31 ground balls and caused 20 turnovers.

Jessica Norby, Ally Kvidera, Amanda Hoffmyer and Alyssa Spencer were second-team selections, while Marissa DiCecco, Ellie Carpenter, Abby Kvidera and Brook Wineland were honorable mentions.

Norby, a junior, led the Skyhawks with 22 goals, 11 assists and 33 points, with Ally Kvidera right behind in all three categories with 17 goals, nine assists and 26 total points.

Hoffmyer, a sophomore defender, caused 15 turnovers and pulled in 26 groundballs for FLC. Spencer, a freshman and Durango High School alumna, flourished in her first season, and her 11.49 goals-against average was second-best in the WILA only to Christine Hehmeyer of Lindenwood for goalies with at least 500 minutes played.

DiCecco, a freshman attacker, scored 10 goals and had three assists for 13 total points in 12 games, while fellow freshman Carpenter scored 13 times and had a pair of assists to go with a team-high 32 draw controls in the mifdield.

Abby Kvidera did a bit of everything in 2013, scoring eight times, adding five assists, picking up 29 groundballs, winning eight draw controls and causing eight turnovers. Wineland, a sophomore, scored 15 goals, good for third on the team, while winning 21 draw controls.

“I am very proud of our team as a whole,” MacDonald said. “There are a lot of excellent athletes in the WILA.”

Lindenwood’s Shelby Polk scored a league-record 58 goals and had 70 total points and 91 draw controls to lead the WILA in all three categories, earning her Offensive Player of the Year honors. Her head coach, Jack Cribbin, was tabbed the league’s top coach for leading the Lady Lions to a 10-0 WILA record. Erin Todd of Regis scored 35 times and had 45 total points to earn Freshman of the Year honors.
