CDOT announces construction team to build the U.S. 550/160 connection

The Colorado Department of Transportation has selected Lawrence Construction Co. and RS&H Inc. for the design and construction of the $98.6 million U.S. Highway 550/160 Connection South Design-Build Project just south of Durango. Both companies are from the Denver area.

Lawrence Construction and RS&H were chosen from two design-build teams that submitted proposals in October. CDOT evaluated the proposals based on the desired outcomes and the commitment to the project goals: maximize project scope, an integrated approach to earthwork, a strong design-build team, quality design and construction and corridor aesthetics.

The project will realign U.S. Highway 550 directly into the existing U.S. Highway 160 interchange near Grandview, eliminating the steep and curved grade of the current Farmington Hill. This realignment will eliminate the need for the existing traffic light at the base of Farmington Hill.

Highway 550 will be widened with additional lanes and shoulders south of Farmington Hill. The project will also include other features, such as wildlife underpass crossings and deer fencing, designed to reduce animal-vehicle collisions.
