CDOT hosts open house Thursday on highway improvements

Traffic headed into town on north Main Avenue in April 2015. The area is part of a roadway improvement project that will begin next month.

Herald Staff Report

An open house to provide information about an upcoming highway improvement project on U.S. Highways 160 and 550 through Durango is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor, Acme Concrete Paving of Spokane, Washington, will also answer questions at the event at the CDOT maintenance training room, 20581 U.S. Highway 160.

The project area will impact Durango’s main business corridor, from Tech Center Drive to Animas View Drive off north Main Avenue.

The highways will undergo a concrete pavement rehabilitation project starting March 6, weather permitting.

The project is expected to last about three months; work is to be completed prior to Memorial Day weekend and the start of the summer tourism season.

At the open house, the public will receive information on Acme Concrete Paving Inc. and benefits of the project, such as prolonged life of the concrete pavement, enhanced highway safety for all users, improved roadway smoothness, restored skid resistance of the pavement surface, replacement and repairs of the damaged concrete pavement, removal of conflicting stripe and pavement marking “shadows,” installation of new pavement markings with bike lanes, and travel and access impacts.
