A 64-year-old Colorado Department of Transportation worker is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle last week west of Pagosa Springs.

Nolan Olson was filling potholes Friday morning on U.S. Highway 160 just east of mile marker 140 when he was hit by a passing car, said CDOT spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes.

Schwantes said Olson was rushed to Pagosa Springs Medical Center before being flown to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known Wednesday.

Olson, a 14-year employee at CDOT, is a Pagosa Springs resident.

Pagosa Springs Police Department did not immediately return a phone call Wednesday seeking details about the accident.

The accident is a reminder for drivers to slow down and be cautious of road workers, Schwantes said.

“This brings to light how dangerous the work is for our crews who work on the highways,” she said. “Injuries happen statewide every year. We would like to urge the traveling public to be aware of their surroundings and always look for our work vehicles parked along the roadway.”

A Go Fund Me account has been set up for Olson.
