If there was ever any question about how much teachers impact their students, this is the answer.

Members of the Florida Mesa Elementary School fifth-grade class of 1960 are throwing a 100th birthday party for their teacher, Grace Erikson.

The party will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Eolus Room at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

In addition to teaching at Florida Mesa, Erikson also taught at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary and Miller Junior High schools in her more than 20-year career with Durango School District 9-R.

“She is one fine lady,” said Gary Roth, a member of the class.
