Celebrating creativity: An October to fall into fun

Jason Lythgoe

Last month, Durango came alive with creativity and community spirit as we celebrated the 30th annual Autumn Arts Festival. This milestone event showcased the incredible talents of artists from around the country, drawing visitors from near and far. Even with the rain, the event was a great success. There’s something unique about dodging that Southwest Colorado weather for 20 minutes inside an artist’s tent.

As we transition into October, the excitement continues with the opening of the “Dark Side of the Mind” gallery exhibit on Friday at this month’s First Friday Art Walk. Be sure to add it to your gallery checklist. This intriguing showcase invites visitors to explore the complex realms of human psychology through art. Featuring local and regional artists, the exhibit promises a thought-provoking journey into themes from the darker side. Running through the first week of November, it’s an experience not to be missed, offering a unique lens through which we can reflect on our inner selves.

In addition to this compelling exhibit, mark your calendars for Oct. 24, when Durango's beloved “Rocky Horror Show” returns for its 16th consecutive year. This year, the production takes on a thrilling spy movie theme, promising an unforgettable blend of comedy, music and a touch of intrigue. Local theater enthusiasts and Rocky Horror fans alike will revel in the interactive experience, complete with audience participation and plenty of surprises. Running until Nov. 2, this show is a fantastic opportunity to embrace the quirky spirit of the season while supporting our talented local performers. Come in costume and get ready to “do the time warp again!”

Durango’s artistic landscape is flourishing, and these upcoming events reflect the passion and creativity that define our community. Whether you’re an art lover, a theater enthusiast or simply looking for a fun night out, there’s something for everyone this fall. Let’s continue to celebrate the arts and support our local artists as we embrace the season of creativity in all its forms!
