Each year, the Local First Indie Awards shine a spotlight on the people, businesses and nonprofits that make La Plata County not just a place to live, but a place to love. These awards recognize the local legends, rising stars, community collaborators and localists who strengthen our local economy while also championing values of sustainability, equity and ingenuity.
This year’s winners were recently honored during the 2025 Local First Member Celebration, held at the newly opened EsoTerra Arboretum. With stunning mesa views, fabulous live music, delicious cider and warm mountain air, it was the perfect setting for a night of local pride. The event was made possible with generous support from our presenting sponsor Shaw Solar, a longtime advocate for sustainability and local business, and other sponsors including Jay Short Insurance, Durango Land & Homes, Jimmy’s Music & Supply, EsoTerra Ciderworks and RAD Transport.
Now, we’re excited to share the highlights of this year’s Indie Awards – a celebration of the outstanding local businesses and individuals who are making a lasting impact in our community.
Columbine Landscapes took home the Local Legend Award, given to a business that has become a cornerstone of the community. With its dedication to sustainable and native landscaping, Columbine has helped shape not only La Plata County’s scenery, but also its commitment to the environment. Runners-up included beloved bookstore Maria’s Bookshop and zero-waste pioneer WeFill.
The Rising Star Award went to Durango Sustainable Goods, a business that’s growing quickly while promoting conscious consumerism and eco-friendly living. It is helping locals and visitors make greener choices, one product at a time. Community gems Café Amor, Meadow Market and Jimmy’s Music were also recognized for their impressive young businesses.
In the Community Collaborator category, 4CORE (Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency) was honored for its deep partnerships and regional leadership in energy efficiency and sustainability. It’s helping residents and businesses build a greener future. Close behind were Durango Outdoor Exchange and Table to Farm Compost, both promoting reuse and the value of a circular economy.
The night’s most heartfelt recognition came with the Localist of the Year Award, which honors people who go above and beyond in living out local-first values. Shaheen Hangvaal was named this year’s Localist for her tireless support of indie businesses and community initiatives – including spearheading the debut of our recent Stand Up for Local First comedy night. Honorable mentions included longtime local supporters Jerry and Karen Zink; Jill and Ted Wright; Michael and Elaine Moravan; and Mike and Lenore Brieger.
These winners are more than names – they’re neighbors, visionaries and changemakers who remind us why living local matters. Each one plays a unique role in building a more resilient, connected and vibrant La Plata County. Many thanks to sponsors that honored awardees with fabulous gifts: LoveDGO Gift Boxes, Honeyville, Meadow Market and EsoTerra Ciderworks.
To all the winners, nominees and supporters: Thank you for keeping our region bold and beautifully local!
