Centauri outnumbers Wolverines

Low numbers hurt BHS wresting in dual

Forfeits made the final 56-24 score in Bayfield and Centauri’s wrestling dual Friday in Bayfield look more lopsided than the competition on the mat.

Centauri gained 24 points from forfeits, and the Wolverines received eight, which would add up to a 32-18 win for the Falcons.

“We didn’t wrestle too bad,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said. “The matches we lost, we had every opportunity to win.”

Junior Sam Westbrook pinned his opponent in the second period for BHS after the Wolverines forfeited the 220-pound slot.

Garrett Beebe lost at 106 pounds, Joey Sandrey lost via a technical fall, and Cody Speece was pinned at 120 pounds.

“He was in the match early,” McMenimen said. “Then he gave up some takedowns he shouldn’t have.”

The Wolverines forfeited at 126 pounds before Taylor Winch got them back on the board with a pin at 132 pounds.

Lane Grimwood was pinned at 138 pounds for BHS.

Wolverines’ senior Colter McMenimen pinned his opponent in the first period at 145 pounds, and BHS received a forfeit of their own at 152 pounds.

Gus Roberts was pinned at 160 pounds, and Marquis Mashak lost at 170 pounds to close out the dual.

BHS competes at the Rocky Mountain Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday in Pagosa Springs.
