The Bayfield High School wrestling team traveled to Centauri to take on the Falcons on Thursday night and returned home defeated, 48-24.
Bayfield only got three wins – all by pin – on the night.
Sam Westbrook pinned Evan Shacon, Ryan Nava pinned Brian Shawcost and Macoy Michaeli pinned Weston Huffaker.
“We came out flat,” Bayfield head coach Neil Barnes said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “Centauri was better. A few things contributed to that. We’re a young team and we didn’t wrestle to my expectations.”
Barnes added that his wrestling squad is not at full strength nor in wrestling shape because Bayfield’s championship football season ran through the end of November. Nava and Westbrook were on the football team this season.
“We need a lot of conditioning,” Barnes said. “This will take time and growth. I felt like we were on our heels, and we can’t win doing that.”
